I have already posted the basic version of coconut chutney and this is with red chillies.I love ginger flavour the best in this red coconut chutney.You can serve it for idli, dosa, pongal, uthappam adai etc.Looking for a spicy chutney then check this super fiery chilli chutney recipe.

    Red Coconut Chutney

    Red Coconut Chutney is a tasty, mild chutney made by blending coconut, spices and chilli. Red Coconut Chutney is a relished as an accompaniment for Idli, Dosa, Uttapam & South Indian Tiffin. Red Coconut Chutney recipe is explained in this post with step by step pictures.

    Ingredients

    • 1/2 cup coconut
    • 1 tbsp fried gram dal
    • 1 tsp tamarind
    • 2 red chillies
    • 1/4 inch piece ginger
    • salt to taste

    TO TEMPER:

    • 2 tsp oil
    • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
    • 1/2 tsp urad dal
    • few curry leaves
    • a tiny pinch hing

    Instructions

    • Get all your ingredients ready. First grind all the ingredients together with little water to a fine paste along wit salt.
    • Heat oil – add the items listed under ‘to temper’ let it splutter and dals turn golden brown then add it to the chutney, add little water to get to the desired consistency.
    • Serve Red Coconut Chutney with idli/dosa!

    Notes

    • You can even add a garlic clove while grinding , gives great flavour.
    • Adjust red chillies according to the spice level you want your chutney to be.
    • Serve it with idli, dosa or even adai as I did.
    • You can even soak red chillies in hot water for few mins and then add it while grinding….this way it gets grinded smooth.

      hi sharmi…. nice collection of chutneys…. ;)….. have a doubt ….if red chilly grinded without roasting wont it give raw smell and in the ingredient plate next to the ginger is it tamarind?

        No you will not feel the raw taste….But if you are more concerned then you can dry roast and then add.But for yrs I have been making it like this only..

      I don't know if you have posted this but reading this recipe reminds me of the red chutney thats made at my place. Its awesome n spicy. Just shallots coconut oil salt and red chilli grind to a coarse chutney
