About the festival

Karthigai Deepam, Thrikarthika or Karthikai Vilakkidu  is a typical festival of lights of the southern part of India.  Kaarthigai Deepam, is celebrated on the full moon day of the Karthigai month.  Furthermore, it coincides with the Kirthigai star. First day of this festival is “Appa karthigai” and the second day is “Vadai karthigai”. Subsequently, the third day of this festival is the Maha Karthigai! Specifically, most of the families in Tamilnadu make Pori urundai for this festival.

Especially, people light lamps in their homes, temples and the workplace on Karthigai Deepam. The home looks heavenly with oil lit lamps everywhere. The idea behind this festival is to keep away bad things from life and welcome the good and holy things of life.

Devotees offer pori, vetrilai pakku, fruits as neivedhyam for God Shiva. Jaggery is the main ingredient and we use it to make pori urundai, kadalai urundai, kadala urundai, pottukadalai urundai, appam, payasam, vadai etc. In addition, jaggery provides the body heat during winter days. Therefore most receipes use jaggery as the main ingredient.
Above all, people believe that Lord Shiva appeared in Thiruvannamalai hills on Karthigai Deepam. Lakhs of devotees perform 16 km Girivalam. After that, a moist black ash (‘Mai’ in tamil) which are the remains after the lighting of the Ghee & Cotton Wick will be distributed as Prasadam to devotees.
In summary, people await for this festival as it brings lot of positivity to home!
