About Karthigai Kozhukattai
Karthigai Kozhukattai is a traditional South Indian recipe made especially during Karthigai Deepam festival. It is shaped like small lamps called deepam and used during the pooja. After lighting, it is served which makes it very unique compared to other dishes. This recipe is different from regular kozhukattai.
This kozhukattai has a soft chewy texture and has a mild taste as it is made with just rice flou, salt and water. Ghee or oil added inside gives a slight richness and flavour to it. It is light to eat and feels simple. Making it in lamp shape during festival feels special and traditional.
There are few variations to this recipe and you can try based on your liking. You can shape it as small balls for snack or make different shapes for kids. Some people also add coconut or jaggery for a sweet version and it have options to try. This recipe you can adjust little and still it comes good.
Gemerally we use this method for making simple kozhukattai. Karthigai Kozhukattai Recipe is nothing but our regular kozhukattai shaped as karthigai vizhakku. So its edible lamps kozhukattai made with rice flour.
I saw these cute edible lamps in our neighbours house and when I asked they said its made with homemade rice flour without salt and its a custom for them to make these every karthigai deepam. So I too tried and it was a instant hit.
You can involve older kids in making this especially the shaping part as they will enjoy doing it. You can make this kozhukattai for evening snacks too however this lamp shaped karthigai kozhukattai we make particularly for karthigai deepam.

Karthigai Kozhukattai Ingredients
- Rice flour - I used homemade rice flour to make this kozhukattai but you can also use store bought idiyappam flour.
- Water - hot water is used to make the dough soft and smooth, add slowly to get correct consistency.
- Oil or ghee - used ghee for filling which gives nice flavor. You can use oil also as per your choice.

How to make Karthigai Kozhukattai Step by Step
1.First prepare the outer dough. Measure and take rice flour in a mixing bowl, add salt.

2.Mix it once. Boil water until it bubbles up, switch off then add it to rice flour.

3.Mix with a ladle, once it starts to come together, Set aside for few minute to cool down. Be careful because the dough will be very hot. Let it rest for few minutes after it is warm enough to handle with hand, bring everything together to form a smooth dough without any cracks.

4.Make equal sized balls, first take one and flatten it.

5.Shape them as a lamp - similar to a karthigai deepam. Similarly repeat to finish the dough. Steam cook for 10-12 minutes, depends on the size you make. Let it cool down first.

6.After it cools down fill each lamp with ghee or oil, apply turmeric, kumkum and finally light them up. Karthigai kozhukattai ready.

Offer to god then serve. Cute edible lamps for karthigai deepam ready!

- Dough consistency - I make sure dough is soft and without cracks. If it is dry it may break while shaping.
- Handling dough - you should be careful while mixing as water will be hot. After few minutes you can use hands to knead.
- Shaping lamps - I shape gently using fingers to form lamp. Do not press too hard as it may crack.
- Steaming time - I steam it until its cooked well. It depends on size so keep checking.

Serve this warm or at room temperature, its best to consume fresh as it may become hard after some time. Store leftover in fridge and steam again before serving. You can shape it as small balls for snack or make different shapes for kids.

Yes you can use idiyappam flour from store. It works well for this recipe.
