Bread Upma – A very humble dish that you can make it in a jiffy, to make it wholesome I added some vegetables. It was a very appealing and colorful bowl of bread upma for breakfast. I was running like an headless chicken from morning that I couldn’t make the post any earlier but glad that I could make it atleast by today. I am partial when it comes to bread, anything with bread is a winner to me and that justifies a separate page for bread recipes.

    Notes

    • Adding vegetables is of your choice. You can add any of your favourite vegetable. You can even make it plain without adding veggies just plain when you are pressed for time.
    • Make sure not to drain cooked water to retain the nutrients of the veggies.
    • You can add a pinch of sambar powder too for extra flavour.
    • You can replace green chillies with 1/2 tsp red chilli powder.
    • I used fresh veggies, you can use frozen too....In that case you can just cook it along with onion itself no need to precook it.
    • Adding tomato sauce gives a nice tanginess to the upma. You can replace it with lemon juice too.

    • 1 onions chopped lengthwise
    • 1 tomato
    • 1 tbsp tomato sauce optional
    • 1 tsp red chilli powder
    • 1/2 tsp garam masala powder
    • a pinch turmeric powder
    • 1/2 tsp pepper powder optional
    • 2 tsp coriander leaves for garnish
    • 2 tsp oil
    • salt as required

    To temper:

    • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
    • 1/2 tsp jeera
    • 2 tsp oil
    • few curry leaves

    Instructions

    • Heat oil in a tawa, add the ‘to temper’ ingredients and fry for a min.
    • Add onions and saute it till it becomes light brown.
    • Add tomatoes and saute till mushy and raw smell leaves.
    • Then add turmeric chilli, garam masala powders, required salt and tomato sauce.
    • Fry till the spices get mixed well.
    • Sprinkle little water and allow it to cook for 2 mins.
    • Add the chopped bread and mix till all is combined well.
    • Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and switch off!
    • Your masala bread upma is ready to be served!

    Notes

    • You can even add a tsp of ginger garlic paste while sauting onions.
    • Also if you dont prefer the masala flavour just ignore the spices and go ahead like the normal upma.In that case you can skip garam masala and add sambar powder.
    • Adding tomato sauce gives a nice tangy taste so I prefer adding it. If you dont like the chunky tomato pieces, you can also puree the tomatoes and add it.

I love bread upma too–so much so that I'm sometimes tempted to make bread upma with fresh bread, rather than eat it as is 🙂 Love the addition of vegetables!

I tried to make this. But, my bread became very soggy within 30 mins of preparation. I did made sure all the water from the vegetables and sauce were fully evaporated before i add the bread. I used the Whole wheat bread. Can you tell what i might have done wrong ?
