    About Wheat Rava Upma

Wheat Rava Upma is a popular variation of the traditional rava upma but a healthier version. It is most recommended dish for all ages. Upma is a traditional indian dish made with semolina or sooji or rava, and this rava upma is a healthy variation that incorporates coarse wheat semolina instead.

This Upma is a popular choice for breakfast in many households and is loved for its simplicity and flavors. I like both wheat and white rava recipes….My favourite combo being with sugar or coconut chutney or with sambar…yumm combo!

Mittu loves upma with rasam and attimes with curd too. Do you have any interesting combination to share? Amma makes it in pressure cooker but I always prefer to make it in open pot.

    Wheat Rava Upma Ingredients

    • Rava / Sooji / Semolina: I have used store bought rava (hard wheat / semolina) for this recipe. It is unroasted variety so I always roast it for few seconds along with vegetables before cooking.
    • Spices & Basic Veggies : Upma recipe needs a simple tempering with mustard seeds, urad dal, chana dal, curry leaves and chilli etc. I added carrots and peas to make it wholesome and colorful too.
    • Ghee / Oil : Use ghee when available as ghee takes upma to a different level of taste. I use regular cooking oil (groundnut oil) alternatively you can use coconut oil too.

Wheat Rava Upma Recipe Step by Step

15.Again cook covered for 5-7 mins in low flame.

    16.Now it is done.

17.Fluff the upma. Add 1 tablespoon ghee or coconut oil. When hot it will look sticky but will be perfectly after cooling down for sometime.

18.This is just for preserntation you can serve it as such too. Now fill upma in a greased bowl.

19.Invert to the serving plate to demould.

20.Wheat rava upma is ready! Serve with chutney of your choice.

    Expert Tips

    • For pressure cooking method add 3 cups water and pressure cook for 2 whistles in medium flame.
    • Add a handful of chopped mint leaves for extra flavour. It gives it a good biryani flavour so do try and enjoy.
    • If you like your upma more goey then you can use 3.5 cups of water.
    • Add 1/4 cup mint leaves if you like the flavour.
    • If you prefer you can add vegetables of your choice to make it more filling and colorful too.

    Serving & Storage Suggestion

Wheat Rava Upma can be paired up with any spicy chutney or coconut chutney or sambar. Kids will love it with ghee and sugar or with just plain curd. This keeps good for a day – For later use within the day, refrigerate and reheat it before serving.

Ghee-sugar is one of my favorites ways of eating this upma. Very nostalgic as it beings me memories of being at my grandma's place. Loved your crisp, neat clicks!

I miss this wheat rava here..When ever am returning from coimbatore, "Mayil" mark rava will be traveling with me! 🙂 Just finished it off and bought a pack here, which tastes like broken wheat!

Nice upma, I never pressure cooked, nor added mint. It takes only a few minutes for the rava to cook, so why using pressure cooker Sharmi?

Upma and banana is our favorite combo! 🙂
