    About Sweet and Salt Biscuits

Sweet and salt biscuits are a very popular tea time snack in many bakeries. They are light in texture, crispy and has that slight salty bite along with sweet taste. Because of this balance, you can easily eat 2–3 with no heaviness. It is the kind of biscuit that goes well any time of the day, not just tea time.

The dough is made with flour, butter, sugar and little milk just to bring it together. Roll them thin, cut into shapes and bake till golden. The small pinch of salt is what makes this recipe different from normal sweet cookies and gives that bakery taste. Even first timers in baking can try this recipe as it is very forgiving and simple.

You can try small variations with this. Adding jeera or ajwain to the dough gives a nice flavor. You can also increase sugar if you like more sweet. Even the shape can be changed using different cookie cutters. I sometimes cut into stars or hearts to make it more exciting. Each version tastes nice and has that tea shop feel.

I usually bake these on weekends as a small snack. My family loves it with evening tea. I store them in an airtight box but honestly they finish very soon.

    Sweet and Salt Biscuits Ingredients

    • Maida – I used plain flour to make biscuits, it gives soft texture and crispness. You can use half wheat flour too but bakery style comes with maida.
    • Butter – Soft butter at room temperature makes dough smooth and gives flavor. I used unsalted, but if using salted reduce salt in recipe.
    • Powdered sugar – I used powdered sugar so it mixes well with butter and flour. Gives mild sweetness.
    • Milk – Milk is only to bring the dough together. Do not add more else dough becomes sticky. You can use raw or boiled milk.

    Expert Tips

    • Do not knead too much – Just mix and bring the dough together, that’s enough. If you keep kneading hard then biscuits will turn tough and not crispy.
    • Roll it thin – Make sure to roll the dough thin, so it bakes well and comes out crisp. If it is rolled thick then the middle part stays soft and not nice.
    • Always preheat oven – Preheating for 10 minutes is must, else the biscuits may not bake evenly. Hot oven gives that nice golden finish.
    • Keep a eye while baking – Time depends on how thick or thin you roll. After 10 minutes check once, when the edges start to brown you can switch off.
    • Try flavoring – You can add jeera, ajwain or even pepper to give different taste. Each time it feels like a new biscuit.

Hello! I tried out your recipe and added mixed herbs like oregano, parsley, basil, Rosemary and jeera. Added a bit of chili powder and salt. They turned out exceptional. Also I used ghee because I didn't have butter.. it worked well too. Thanks!!
