    About Saffron Milk

Saffron Milk also called as Kesar Milk is a traditional drink made in many Indian homes. In this recipe milk is boiled and then saffron is added to infuse its flavour well. Sugar is added for sweetness and everything is simmered for few minutes. It is often served during special occasions or guests visit.

Saffron, the king of spices is also known as Kesar or Kumkumapoovu. From a single flower only three strands of saffron are obtained and it involves a lot of human labour which is produced in Kashmir and it is said to be one of the most expensive spices.

Saffron Milk is often recommended to consume during pregnancy. It is actually a myth that having saffron and milk regularly in pregnancy leads to have a fairer baby. There is no proven fact that complexion of the baby depends on the intake of saffron by the mother.

Actually saffron has a lot of health benefits which might be ignored by pregnant women those days, so having said this helps in having fairer babies may have led many pregnant women to consume this saffron milk regularly.

The texture of this drink is smooth and slightly rich, also milk forms the base and saffron gives mild flavour and light golden colour. The aroma comes very good when it is simmered well. It feels light but also gives little richness. It is also soothing to drink when served warm.

You can make few variations and try in this recipe. You can just add in some nuts like badam or pista for extra taste and also add cardamom powder for more flavor. Also adjust sweetness as per your taste and you can also try using jaggery instead of sugar for different flavor.

I usually make at night time when I want something warm and simple. It is easy to prepare and feels soothing to drink.
