    About Cardamom Milk

Cardamom Milk, also known as Elaichi Milk, is a traditional drink made with crushed cardamom pods, milk and sugar. It has a light, comforting flavor and is often enjoyed after meals. Its known for its calming effects, this warm drink helps ease digestion and is believed to promotes good sleep.

The method is very simple. Whole cardamom pods are gently crushed and added to boiling milk and simmered so that the flavor is infused fully. Once done, it’s sweetened to taste either with regular white sugar or cane sugar. You can enjoy it warm or chilled with few ice cubes.

You can easily adjust the flavor to suit your taste. You can either use crushed cardamom or cardamom powder. Cardamom powder works too, but using whole pods gives a fresher and more aromatic taste. Just crush the pod slightly before adding, it helps release the flavor better while simmering.

Cardamom helps in digestion and has many health benefits including treating sleep trouble, lowering blood pressure etc. This milk is sure a welcoming change to the usual routine.

I make this when I feel like having something light but flavorful before bed. It’s quick to prepare, and the cardamom smell instantly lifts my mood. It’s become a small routine I look forward to on quiet nights.

Still I remember the first time I had this cardamom milk or elachi milk in an interview when I was a fresher, it was so soothing and tasty especially when you are held up with an aptitude test which was so confusing at least for me.

I did not clear the interview is another story. Later I found that the small IT company serves some healthy drink every day for evening instead of tea. Suddenly I remembered the taste of this drink and wanted to post here.

    Cardamom Milk Ingredients

    • Cardamom –  I have used crushed cardamom to release the flavor. You can use cardamom powder too.
    • Milk – This is the base of the drink. Use full-fat milk for a rich taste and toned milk for a lighter version. Both work well.
    • Cane Sugar – This adds a gentle sweetness. Cane sugar gives a slightly earthy note, while regular white sugar blends in quickly and sweetens mildly.

    Expert Tips

    • Crush cardamom pod – Slightly crush a whole green cardamom pod to release flavor. Don’t powder it just crush it coarsely.
    • Cook gently – Cook the milk on low heat for a few minutes so the cardamom flavor gets absorbed fully into the milk.
    • Adjust sweetness – Add cane sugar or jaggery after switching off the heat to avoid curdling.
    • Straining – Strain before serving to remove cardamom bits and get a smooth, comforting drink.
    • Full-fat milk – Using whole or full cream milk gives the drink a rich, creamy taste and better texture.

    Serving and Storage

Serve cardamom milk warm right after making it. It’s ideal before bedtime or during cold weather. For summer, you can chill it for a few hours and serve cold.

If you’re making a larger batch, you can store the milk in the fridge for a day and gently reheat before serving. Avoid boiling again once sugar is added, especially if using unrefined sugars.

    FAQS

1.Can I use cardamom powder instead of whole pods?

Yes, you can. But just a small pinch. Fresh crushed pods give better aroma and taste.

    2.Is this suitable for kids?

Yes, it is. It’s mild, healthy, and helps calm children before bedtime.

3.Can I add dry fruits or nuts?

Yes, you can add finely chopped or powdered almonds, cashews for a richer taste.

    4.Will cane sugar curdle milk?

It can, if added while milk is still boiling. Always switch off the heat, wait a few seconds, then stir in cane sugar to avoid curdling.

5.Can I make this in advance?

You can, but it’s best enjoyed fresh. If needed, store in the fridge for a day and reheat gently before drinking.
