    About Pineapple Jam

Pineapple Jam is a simple fruit preserve where fresh pineapple is cleaned, chopped, pureed and then cooked with sugar. It slowly thickens into jam consistency which can be stored and used for few weeks. Making jam at home is not very difficult and needs just few ingredients.

This recipe has natural flavor, with slight tang from pineapple and mild sweet. The lemon juice in the end not only balance taste but also help in preserving it for more longer time. If you like chunky texture, you can keep few pineapple bit without puree it fully. Some even add pineapple essence for stronger flavor.

The texture of this jam depends on how long you cook. If cooked longer, it becomes thick and firm, if cooked lesser it stays little soft and spreadable. Both ways are fine depending on how you like to use it. I sometimes make it little loose to spread on bread, and little thick when I want to use as cake filling.

I usually make pineapple jam during summer when pineapples are fresh and juicy. My kids love to spread it on hot toast and it gets over in no time. The kitchen smells so nice when pineapple is cooking, it feels like a small treat in itself.

Making Pineapple Jam at home is very easy, yes with no preservatives, artificial colors and flavors this homemade pineapple jam is full of fruity goodness. Mittu loves pineapple so that was the main reason that I wanted to start trying a jam with this fruit. She loved it so much that she started to eat it as such and it got emptied so soon.

    Pineapple Jam Ingredients

    • Pineapple cubes - I used fresh ripen pineapple and cut into small cubes. Ripe pineapple gives natural sweetness and good flavor. If you use slightly sour ones then jam may taste more tangy.
    • Sugar - I have used this for sweetness and it also helps to preserve the jam. You can reduce sugar if pineapple is very sweet, or increase little if you prefer more sweetness.
    • Lemon juice - I add it at the end after cooling. It balances the flavor, gives slight tartness and also increases shelf life.

    Why This Recipe Works

    • This recipe is easy and needs only few ingredients.
    • You get natural fruity jam without preservative or added color.
    • The jam can used for bread, chapathi, cake and many snack.
    • You can adjust sweet and texture as per your taste and preference.
    • You can store and enjoy home made jam any time.

    Expert Tips

    • Pineapple - I have used ripen pineapple as it gives better flavor. Avoid using very raw pineapples as they turn too sour.
    • Cooking jam - Always cook on low to medium flame. High flame may burn quickly and spoil the taste.
    • Consistency check - To know if jam is ready, take little on spoon, cool it and check if it spreads thick without running.
    • Adding sugar - You can adjust sugar depending on sweetness of fruit. I usually taste puree before adding.
    • Adding lemon juice - I always add only after jam cools down, else it may turn bitter if added while hot.
    • Storage - Use clean dry glass container. I refrigerate and it keeps well for around 2 to 3 weeks.
    • Flavoring - If you like stronger pineapple taste, you can add a drop of pineapple essence. Sometimes I leave small pineapple bits in jam for pulpy feel.

    Serving and Storage

Serve Pineapple Jam with bread toast, plain bread, dosa or chapathi. It also tastes good with poori or as cake filling. Store in airtight container inside fridge. It may thicken slightly after refrigerating, so before using just keep out for some time to get spreadable consistency.

    FAQS

    1.Can I use canned pineapple?

Yes, but fresh pineapple gives better flavor. Canned ones may be too sweet.

2.Why is my jam very thick?

It means it was cooked for longer. You can loosen it by adding little warm water and mixing.

    3.Can I reduce sugar?

Yes you can, but sugar helps in preserving too. If you reduce too much it may not last long.

4.How to know jam is ready?

Take small spoon of jam, cool and spread on plate. If it holds without running, then it is done.

5.How long can I store this jam?

It keeps well for 2-3 weeks in fridge if stored in clean dry jar.
