Sugarcane juice is one of the most refreshing natural drinks that comes to mind during hot summer days. It is made by grinding fresh sugarcane pieces with ginger and lemon, then straining to get the pure sweet juice. It is naturally cooling, light and gives instant energy.

This drink is very popular across roadside stalls where you can see big sugarcane sticks being pressed to extract juice. Making at home is simpler than it looks, and it feels more clean too. Sugarcane juice has a natural sweetness, no need to add sugar, and it feels very hydrating when heat outside is too much.

    About Sugarcane Juice

Sugarcane juice is a traditional Indian summer cooler that is enjoyed across many states. The taste is sweet, little earthy and with lemon or ginger it feels more balanced. It is also a healthy drink as sugarcane is rich in antioxidants, keeps you refreshed and helps to flush toxins from body.

The juice is usually extracted using a machine in shops, but at home we can chop the sticks into small pieces and grind in mixer. With a strainer you can easily collect the juice. Adding ginger gives slight spice kick, and lemon brings a tang which goes well with the sweetness. Salt is optional, but I feel it lifts the taste a bit more.

There are many variations of this juice depending on region. Some add mint leaves for freshness, some add pepper for slight spice, while some like to keep it plain and simple. Even adding little ice while serving makes it more cooling. The best part is, sugarcane itself has enough sweetness, so no extra sugar is needed.

I usually make sugarcane juice during peak summer afternoons. It feels very refreshing when had chilled, and my family always enjoys it as a change from regular lemon juice or buttermilk. It's one of those drinks that feels naturally comforting.

    Sugarcane Juice Ingredients

    • Sugarcane - I have used chopped sugarcane pieces, they give natural sweetness and juice. Fresh sticks always taste better, try to avoid dry ones.
    • Ginger - A small piece of ginger gives sharp spicy note which balance the sweetness. You can skip if you like only plain juice.
    • Lemon - I squeezed into the juice adds tang and makes it more refreshing. You can adjust more or less as you like.

    Expert Tips

    • Choose fresh - Always choose sugarcane that is juicy, not very dry or fibrous. It makes juice taste much better.
    • Grinding in batches - I usually grind in small batches as mixer handles it better. Do not overload with too much.
    • Strain well - After grinding, strain it with fine strainer and press nicely to get maximum juice. Sometimes I even squeeze with hand to take out fully.
    • Lemon and salt - I add half lemon and tiny pinch salt, it balance the taste. You can skip both if you like only sweet juice.
    • Serve immediately - Sugarcane juice is best when served fresh and chilled. If kept long it turns dark and loses taste.

    Serving and Storage

Serve sugarcane juice chilled in glasses, you can also add few ice cubes while serving. It goes well as an afternoon drink or just anytime when you feel tired. Leftover juice should be consumed quickly, within few hours, as it doesn't stay fresh for long even in fridge.

    FAQS

1.Can I make sugarcane juice without lemon?

Yes, you can skip lemon if you want plain sweet taste, but I feel lemon gives nice balance.

    2.Can I add mint leaves?

Yes, few mint leaves while grinding gives fresh flavor.

    3.Does sugarcane juice need sugar?

No, sugarcane itself is sweet enough so no need to add sugar.

4.Can I store this juice for a day?

It is best to drink immediately, even in fridge it may change taste after few hours.

    5.Can I skip ginger?

Yes, ginger is optional, you can make plain sugarcane juice without it.
