Coleslaw recipe with step by step pictures and video. It is a simple salad or sidedish made with thinly sliced cabbage, carrot and mayonnaise dressing.

It took me some time to get the perfect thin slices/shreds. I tried few methods using knife peeler but this slicing was the best hence sharing it here.

    What is Coleslaw ?

Coleslaw the word comes from the Dutch word ‘koolsla‘,  ‘kool’ meaning cabbage and ‘sla’ meaning salad or lettuce. Actually cabbage is the only main consistent ingredient in coleslaw.

    About Coleslaw Recipe

Coleslaw is a simple cabbage salad. To begin with first shred both carrot and cabbage thinly. I used my usual grater to achieve this. You can do this with knife also but knife yields cuts instead of shreds so I prefer grater.

    1. Prepare veggies : Get the veggies sliced thin and keep aside.
    2. Mayonnaise dressing : To prepare mayonnaise dressing first add mayo along with salt, pepper,  sugar, vinegar and mustard seeds powder. Mix well and set aside.
    3. Assemble together : First add the veggies to a mixing bowl, add mayonnaise dressing tot it. Mix well and Serve.

    Variations

Therre are quite a few variations to this traditional coleslaw recipe like adding:

    • vegetables like purple cabbage, spring onion
    • sour cream
    • cheese
    • fruits like apple, pineapple
    • low fat version replacing mayonnaise with hung curd

    Serving and Storage

    • You can serve this as a salad for breakfast or as a sidedish for fried items mostly with barbecued meats.
    • Coleslaw can be added as a filling to wraps, burgers, sandwiches etc.
    • This stores well for about a week in fridge however tastes best when had fresh.
