    Masala Chapati is a spicy, masala version of chapatti made by adding spice powders & spices to wheat flour in the recipe of making roti. Masala Chapati is savored by masala & spicy lovers and ideal as a snack. Learn how to make Masala Chapati with step by step pictures.

    I got this recipe from one of our regular readers and tried it. I made few adjustments to suit our taste and here goes the recipe for Masala Chapathi / Khara Chapathi. This is for sure a very welcoming change to our usual rotis, very flavorful and quite easy to put together for dinner.

    About Masala Chapati

    Masala Chapati is regular chapati with spices added. It is very aromatic and flavorful that you don’t need any side dish to go with it. You can serve it with plain curd or a simple raita too.

    Masala Chapati is best for travel as you need no side dish also keeps well for more time. You can pack it for office goers, school kids lunch box too. Try to make variations according to your liking and enjoy!

    Masala Chapati Ingredients

    • Wheat flour – Use whole wheat flour, either homemade or store bought flour.
    • Spice powders – Turmeric powder, Red chili powder, Chat masala powder and Garam masala powders are added.
    • Curd – Curd makes chapati soft.
    • Others – Cumin seeds, kasoori methi is added for flavor.
    • Oil / Ghee – Oil or ghee is needed to toast the chapati.

    How to make masala chapati step by step

    1. Combine all the ingredients except water and oil in a bowl, mix well then add water little by little to gather together. Once it forms a mass, add the oil and knead for 5 minutes to form a soft pliable dough. Rest the dough for at least 30 minutes.

    2.Divide them into equal lemon sized balls and slightly flatten them. Dust flour and roll them into thin chapatis.

    3.Heat a dosa pan, add the chapathi, drizzle oil and cook on both sides until golden brown spots appear here and there. Toast it with oil / ghee.

    Expert Tips

    • You can use roasted cumin seeds powder instead of cumin seeds.
    • Reg the spice measures, you can experiment them according to your taste.
    • I added kashmiri chili powder so it gave a good orangeish red color to the chapathi
    • The chapati is very soft and flavorful that you don’t even need any side dish for it.

    Ingredients

    • 2 cups wheat flour

      can we store this dough for long..or like overnight so that early in the morning i can make the chapati

        Yes the dough will keep well for 2 days, but refrigerate it.And few mins before making the chapati bring the dough to room temperature and then roll it.
