    Homemade Croutons

    Croutons are bite sized bread pieces seasoned with spices, herbs and baked till crisp and toasted. Homemade croutons enhances the taste of soups and salads when served as an accompaniment. These turn out so crunchy and perfect to garnish, serve with soups and salads.

    Homemade Croutons are crunchy and has a good flavor from garlic, mixed herbs and oregano. You will never turn back to store bought croutons once you try them at home.

    Homemade Croutons are great as a topping for your favorite salads or also serves great as floating in a warm bowl of soup. I love soups with croutons the best even my kids are fond of it.

    I made these croutons just with some leftover bread and planned to pair it with tomato soup.The croutons were so good that half of it vanished in no time, the little one so loved it. I reserved some to be served with soup and it was such a nice comforting combo.

    Croutons elevates of the taste of the dish it is added in, makes a boring salad into a tasty dish. You can use any type of leftover bread to make croutons. These garlic flavored croutons are very tasty and packed with full of flavors.

    If you have stale bread or a day old leftover bread then the best way to use it up is by making croutons.

    Homemade Croutons Ingredients

    • Bread – You can use white bread or brown bread. You can even use sour dough bread or cibatta bread or even focaccia bread.
    • Butter – Butter adds flavor to the croutons so do not miss it.
    • Olive oil – Olive oil is added to crisp the bread.
    • Garlic powder – You can even use fresh garlic chopped but it may burn easily so I always use garlic powder.
    • Herbs & Spices – Oregano, pepper powder and mixed herbs is used for croutons.

    Croutons – Why homemade?

    Croutons can be store bought too but homemade is always best as you know exactly what goes into the making. Also it is free from preservatives, artificial flavorings and colors.

    Croutons can be made perfectly in oven. For those who don’t own oven you can toast it in skillet or tawa in low medium flame until crisp. Keep flipping over for even roasting. Use preferably cast iron tawa to make crisp croutons in stove top.

    How to make Croutons Step by Step

    1.Take 4 bread slices. Cut into small squares like this. Preheat oven at 190 DEG C for 10 minutes.

    2.Repeat to finish. Set it aside. It comes to around 3 cups of bread squares.

    3.To a bowl add 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon mixed herbs, 1/2 teaspoon oregano, 1/4 teaspoon pepper powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt.

    4.Take 2 tablespoon melted butter and 1 tablespoon olive oil.

    5.Mix it well and set aside.

    6.To a bowl add the bread cubes and add the prepared seasoning.

    7.Toss it well.

    8.Mix it well with your hands.

    9.To a baking tray lay parchment paper then transfer the bread pieces to it.

    10.Bake in preheated oven at 190 DEG C for 10 minutes or until golden and crisp.

    Homemade croutons are ready to store or serve! Store in an airtight container.

    Expert Tips

    • Keep an eye after 8 minutes as it gets browned faster. Mine got done in 9 mins exactly as my slices were thin. So the baking time depends on the thickness of the bread slice too.
    • You can add crushed fresh garlic or other herbs as per your liking.
    • You can use leftover thick slices of bread for best results.
    • The flavors are endless, you can experiment as per your liking.
    • You can try with other varieties of herbs like basil, rosemary etc.
    • I always add a combination of butter and olive oil which makes it flavorful and crisp.

    Serving & Storage

    Serve it with soups, salads or even have it as such. Store it in airtight container and it keeps well for 2 weeks at least. Store in freezer for up to a month. When you want to serve thaw it and toast it in oven for 2 minutes and fresh croutons are ready!

    Use required amount of oil and butter, spread in single layer in baking sheet – this ensure the baked croutons are crisp.

    2.How to store croutons to retain them crisp?

    Let baked croutons cool down completely then store in a dry container or zip lock bag, remove as much as air as possible.
