Green peas sundal is one of the popular street food sundal, you can see evndors selling it piping hot especially in beach. I’ve already posted the beach sundal with raw mango, now this is a basic sundal version that we can make for navaratri. Yesterday suddenly I remembered that the pack of dried green peas was lying around so soaked it overnight to make this sundal. I made it today morning and clicked it to post it here.

    About Pattani Sundal

Sundal is a dry dish prepared usually with lentils or legumes with a mild tempering and garnished with coconut. I have used pattani or green peas and its a heavenly combo. Pattani sundal is easy to make, just soaking takes time otherwise its vey quick to make for Navaratri. Sundal varieties are not only prepared for festivals , you can make it for mid morning or evening snack.

    Ingredients

    • 1/2 cup green peas dried variety
    • salt to taste

To grind to a coarse mixture :

    • 3 tbsp coconut grated
    • 2 small green chillies
    • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds

    To temper:

    • 2 tsp oil
    • 1 tsp mustard seeds
    • a sprig curry leaves
    • a tiny pinch hing

    Instructions

    • Soak green peas dried variety overnight or at least for 4 hrs.
    • Pressure cook for 2-3 whistles with enough water. The skin may come out, you can discard them as I did or use it as such, Set aside.
    • Transfer the ingredients listed under 'to grind' to a mixer. Grind them to a coarse paste without adding water, set aside.
    • Heat oil in a pan - add the items listed under 'to temper' let it splutter. Then add cooked peas.
    • Give a quick toss. and then add the coconut paste, required salt and mix well. Saute for 2-3 mins until raw smell of green chillies leave. Switch off.
    • Sundal is ready. Serve Pattani Sundal hot / warm as a snack!

    Notes

    • If you are soaking peas overnight then 2 whistles is just enough to cook it soft. But if you are soaking only for 4 hrs then give 3-4 whistles. You can add salt while pressure cooking itself and adjust while mixing with other tempering and coconut mixture.
    • You can even add a small piece of ginger while grinding.
    • Adjust green chillies according to the spicelevel you prefer.
    • You can even use the yellow variety of fried peas for making this sundal recipe.
