    About Garlic Bread

Garlic Bread is made using bread, garlic, butter, herbs and spices. Making perfect garlic bread at home is super easy. You can make either in stove top or in oven. The oven version is more crisp than the stove top version but it is your preference.

Crispy, buttery bread slices topped with garlic and, spices and herbs – this homemade garlic bread is irresistibly delicious. All you need is a handful of staple ingredients and less than 30 minutes of your time to make this flavorful, aromatic spiced bread.

Garlic Bread is an ideal side dish for Italian dishes like pasta etc. But this can be served as a starter or appetizer too. I have shared 2 version of garlic bread the classic version and cheese garlic bread. Both tastes good in its own ways, kids will love the cheese version more for obvious reasons – cheese.

I love garlic bread from Domino’s the stuffed version and I always wanted to try it that way but last time ended up making this quick version of garlic bread.I loved the simplicity of the recipe, so we enjoyed it as a snack on a rainy day.

    Garlic Butter

The secret to a perfect garlic bread is the garlic butter used. A combination of softened good quality butter along with garlic, coriander leaves, mixed herbs, oregano, chilli flakes and pepper powder yields perfectly tasting garlic flavored buttery crisp toasts.

Additionally cheese can be topped up on bread slices and toasted in oven and grilled for the last few minutes for the cheese to turn bubbly, crisp and golden.

    Garlic Bread Ingredients

    • Bread – You can use regular white bread slices or french bread. Traditionally garlic bread is made using french loaf also known as baguette however you can use the regular bread slices too. Alternatively you can use wheat bread too for a healthy version.
    • Garlic – Garlic is minced and added for more flavor. I used my garlic press, you can chopped it finely or mince and add it. The amount of garlic added depends on the garlic flavor you want in your bread.
    • Butter – I used unsalted butter so added salt. If you use salted butter skip salt. Make sure to use good quality butter, I used homemade butter.
    • Herbs – Fresh herbs like coriander leaves is used here. Additionally oregano, chilli flakes, pepper powder and mixed herbs is used.

    Oven vs Stove top

I have shared both versions here with stove top classic garlic bread and oven version of cheese garlic bread.

Garlic bread made in oven is more crisp than the stove top version but taste wise both are almost similar. Using a cast iron tawa for toasting in stove top gives crisp garlic bread though it can’t match the oven crispness.

Garlic bread vs Cheese garlic bread

Class garlic bread is just toasting the bread slices smeared with garlic butter until golden and serving it hot. Cheese garlic bread is covering spread garlic butter with cheese and cooking until cheese turns bubbly. Grilling gives crisp cheesy bubbly garlic cheese bread.

    Expert Tips

    • Bread – Italian or french loaf is best for garlic bread. But if you cannot source it in your place then you can use normal white loaf like I have used.
    • Butter – Always use butter at room temperature. You can use salted or unsalted butter accordingly skip or add salt.
    • Garlic – Fresh garlic is best. Mincing or crushing it fine helps in roasting evenly and crisp.
    • Herbs & Spices – You can replace coriander leaves with parsley for a different flavor. Sprinkle sea salt once toasted if you prefer. I love adding more fresh coriander leaves as it gives great flavor.

    Serving & Storage

Serve garlic bread hot with pasta on the side. You can serve garlic bread as appetizer or starter too. Garlic bread should be had hot and fresh, if you have leftovers you can store it in room temperature for a day and reheat while serving. Do not store prepared garlic bread in fridge it may become hard.

    FAQS

1.How can I serve garlic bread?

Serve garlic bread as such as a starter. Garlic Bread serves great along with soups, pasta, stews etc.

2.Can I use garlic powder instead of garlic?

Fresh garlic is best to use while making garlic butter as it is more flavorful. However you can use garlic powder but the flavor will not be intense.

3.Which variety garlic is best to use?

Any variety fresh garlic is best. Either bigger variety or the small ones both are good to use. But make sure to mince them or chop it very finely.

4.Can I pulse garlic in mixer and use it?

No pulsing will leave out water making it more like a paste which will not be suitable for making garlic bread.

    Notes

    • When you flip the bread slices with the garlic mixture side down on the tawa, it will stick so add more ghee to toast.
    • You can either use olive oil or ghee to toast.
    • You can even toast it in oven. Preheat oven at 175 deg C and bake the bread slices for 5-7mins in toast mode. No need to flip it, just place the slices with applied side on top.
    • Do not add more garlic then it will give a pungent raw smell.
    • While toasting the side which has the garlic paste, keep in low flame and toast well so that there is no raw smell.
    • If you prefer you can even add green chillies sliced thin.

Hi Sharmi.. I made this and we liked it too.. But still, I need a suggestion.. I took every ingredient double the amount as I made for 8 slices of bread.. I can taste the raw smell of garlic coming unlike the one we get in restaurants.. Any idea how could we avoid it?

When you toast it even the garlic will get toasted, if its not toasted well then the raw smell will be there so toast in low flame until garlic is nicely roasted

Hi Sharmilee, Thanks for the suggestion! You know what.. I made it for the second time and we just loved it.. The only alteration I made was roasting the garlic and then grinding it as a paste and it helped! Either way it means the same.. But when I try to toast the side with the topping, it gets stuck to the pan even if I use a lot of ghee!
