    Kosambari is an easy and healthy carrot moong dal salad made for Sri Rama Navami festival.

    About Kosambari

    Kosambari is protein rich and a delicious salad. Kosambari can be made using carrots or cucumber as main ingredient.

    Carrot Kosambari or Cucumber Kosambari are the most commonly made kosambari recipes.

    Rama Navami is a spring Hindu festival that celebrates the birthday of the Hindu God Lord Rama. So thought to post this Carrot Kosambar for the festival.

    A very popular salad in Karnataka named as Hesaru Bele Carrot Kosambari. This can be served as a side with meals or can be had as such too. This is so tempting and attractive especially kids will like it by its look.

    How to make Kosambari

    To begin with first grate carrot and soak moong dal in water for an hour. Make the tadka ready with oil, mustard seeds, hing and  curry leaves. To a mixing bowl add carrot, along with soaked, rinsed moong dal, lemon juice prepared tadka, coconut and required salt. Mix it well. Serve immediately!

    You can alternatively use cucumber instead of carrots. If you use cucumber just chop into bite sized pieces and proceed with remaining steps.

    Kosambari Ingredients

    • Moong dal – Split yellow moong dal is used for kosambari.
    • Coconut – Fresh grated coconut is used as garnish for kosambari.
    • Carrot / Cucumber – You can use either grated carrot or chopped cucumber.
    • Lemon – Lemon gives a tangy flavour to the dish.
    • Tadka – A simple tadka is made using mustard seeds, green chillies,curry leaves and hing.

    Ingredients

    • 1 cup carrot
    • 1/2 no lemon
    • 2 tablespoon moong dal
    • 2 tablespoon coconut

    For tadka:

    • 2 teaspoon oil
    • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
    • 1 no green chilli
    • 5 nos curry leaves
    • 1/8 teaspoon hing

    Instructions

    • Soak moong dal in water for about 1 hour atleast.
    • Rinse it well then drain and set aside.
    • Heat oil in a tadka pan – add the items listed under for ‘tadka’ let it splutter. Switch off and set aside.
    • To a mixing bowl – add carrot along with moong dal, tadka,coconut, lemon juice and required salt.
    • Mix it well. Adjust salt and lemon juice as per taste.
    • Serve and enjoy this healthy salad – Kosambari!

    • You can parboil moong dal and add it too if you don’t like the raw taste. But traditionally moong dal is added raw only.
    • Add cocoumber, raw mango for extra flavour.
    • The quantity of moong dal is your wish you can add even add 1/4 cup for 1 cup carrot.

    Kosambari Recipe Step by step method

    1.Soak moong dal in water for about 1 hour atleast.

    Expert Tips

    • You can add cut cucumber to make Cucumber Kosambari.
    • Adding pomegrante gives it a nice taste too.
    • You can even add raw mango pieces for that tangy taste.
