banana milkshake served in a tall glass

The first time I had banana milkshake was during my school days at a friends place when we were at group study. The memories remain fresh just like this milkshake. When her mother offered me a tall glass of milkshake I first hesitated a bit as I am not fond of banana. But she insisted me to taste it and I loved it so much – I couldn’t resist and emptied the glass in no time.

    About Banana Milkshake

Banana Milkshake is made with banana, milk, sugar and ice cream. Though ice cream is optional I would recommend adding it for more richness and creamy texture. You can even replace ice cream with frozen milk and increase sugar.

Banana Milkshake is an ideal way to use up the ripened banana. Banana gives nice flavor and creaminess to the milkshake. This Banana Milkshake recipe makes a thick and creamy shape with the perfect ratio of milk : banana : icecream.

Bananas sweeten once they are ripened so choose slightly spotty fruit for best sweet milkshake. Using frozen banana or frozen milk will give a thick, creamy and velvety milkshake.

If you have ripened banana you can cut into slices, freeze it and then use it whenever needed. The variations are endless you can use cinnamon powder, honey replacing sugar, for a unique flavor, use caramel syrup, add nuts etc.

Fresh vs Frozen Banana for Milkshakes

You can either use fresh banana or frozen banana for milkshakes. Using frozen banana yields more thick and creamier shakes, so you can skip ice cream. Thaw the frozen banana for 5-10 mins for it to easily blend.

I have used fresh banana and ice cream instead of frozen which gives the same result too. You can even choose to use fresh banana with frozen milk to get a thick and creamy shake. Either banana or milk should be frozen to get perfect thick shake, else use ice cream.

    Banana Milkshake Ingredients

    • Banana – Chose ripe banana that is easy to blend. I have used 1 long variety yellow banana called as Moris banana.
    • Milk – Use milk that is already boiled. Chill the milk for few minutes before blending.
    • Ice cream – I have used vanilla ice cream which is the best combination for this shake.
    • Sugar – I have used white sugar for sweetness, adjust the measure according to the sweetness of the banana. You can replace it with honey or brown sugar too.
    • Vanilla – Vanilla essence is optional but gives an intense flavor to the shake.

    Expert Tips

    • There are lot of variations to this  milkshake – You can add caramel sauce or peanut butter. For a chocolate flavor add nutella  or coco powder.
    • You can even add 4-6 almonds soaked and skin removed.
    • You can either use fresh or frozen banana.
    • Serve chilled and fresh always.
    • Adding ice cubes will turn milkshakes watery so do not add them. You can add frozen banana or frozen milk instead.

    Serving & storing

Serve the milkshake fresh with a topping of whipped cream. I would not recommend storing the milkshake as it is best to consume fresh. However you can chill the shake for 1-2 hours if need be.

this is a regular on our sunday brunch menu. but i make variations of this – with nutella for me and DH but DD likes it with vanilla, garnished with butterscotch chips! On busy weekday mornings, I add some oats and yogurt to it and call it breakfast 😉 Another lovely addition is coffee, a wee bit of coffee really brings out the banana flavor!
