I have heard and read a lot of health benefits of kollu(horsegram) so have started to include horse gram also known as kollu in our regular menu. Kollu Rasam is so flavorful and a comforting combo with hot rice. You can pair it with kollu sundal or any simple stir fried poriyal.

    About Kollu Rasam

Kollu Rasam is made using kollu, tomato, tamarind extract, pepper, garlic cumin seeds, tempering herbs and spices. Kollu Rasam Recipe is easy and quick to make. Kollu slows ageing, controls sugar levels, promotes weight loss & more.

I love the taste of kollu by itself but I made sundal with the remaining kollu as hubby likes sundal. The rasam is very flavorful with freshly crushed garlic and pepper. Suits best for steamed rice. It is called horse gram in english and kollu in tamil.

    • Kollu – Kollu also known as horse gram is used here. You can use the cooked water for rasam and the kollu for making sundal
    • Tamarind – Pick the speck and seeds and discard them before soaking.
    • Tomato – Tomatoes add a tangy taste and flavor to rasam.
    • Cumin seeds, Pepper – Cumin and pepper forms the base for any rasam and greatly helps in digestion.
    • Tempering – A basic tempering is made using mustard seeds, red chilies, hing and curry leaves.
    • Garlic – Garlic gives a great flavor to rasam. Crushing and adding enhances the taste.
    • Coriander leaves – Rasam is incomplete without coriander leaves, so use generously.

Kollu is good for reducing weight and to shed cholesterol, however generates lot of heat to body if consumed regularly. Once or twice in a week would be okay and would be delicious as well.

Looks so good. We call it Saar-Upkari. The saaru is the rasam and the upkari or the curry is what is made with the cooked gram.
