Ingredients

  • ¼ cup kollu / horse gram
  • 1 small sized tomato roughly chopped
  • 2 teaspoon tamarind pulp
  • 2 teaspoon coriander leaves finely chopped
  • salt to taste

To Temper:

  • ½ teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 2 red chillies
  • few curry leaves
  • 1 generous pinch hing
  • 1 teaspoon oil

To crush coarsely :

  • 3 garlic
  • ½ teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 10 whole pepper

Instructions

  • Soak kollu(horsegram) overnight with enough water. Pressure cook with 1 and ½ cups of water for 5 whistles. Drain the water with a handful of kollu, set it aside. Reserve the remaining kollu for making sundal.
  • Crush garlic, pepper and jeera coarsely using a hand mortar and pestle, set aside. In a pan add oil and temper the items listed under 'to temper'
  • Then add the crushed garlic-pepper-jeera mixture and sauté for a minute. Then add required salt, hing and turmeric powder. Add tomatoes and sauté till raw smell leaves.
  • Mash the kollu with the drained water once and then add it to the tempered items. Add tamarind paste and allow it for a frothy boil. Then add chopped coriander leaves and switch it off.
  • Kollu Rasam is ready!

Notes

  • We can also add rasam powder but I prefer freshly crushed garlic jeera and pepper.
  • Soaking kollu is a must so that it gets cooked soft.
  • You can use cooked water for making rasam, soup and cooked kollu for making sundal or any stir fried dish.
