How to make sprouts at home with green gram & black chana is explained in this post with step by step pictures and tips. Sprouts are protein packed no cook healthy platter that is commonly eaten in morning and as snack. Many recipes like sprouts salad, sprouts rice, sprouts sundal etc can be made using sprouts.

    Homemade Sprouts with green gram

Homemade Sprouts is always healthy. I make sprouts with green moong bean regularly. This time I tried with black chana too but it took more time around 2 days for even the small sprouts to appear. I have seen sprouts / mixed bean sprouts at stores but haven’t reached out anytime as I always doubt on the hygiene factor so always make my own batch.

    How to make sprouts?

    • Though sprouts are easily available in supermarkets , I would highly recommend making your own batch. Its not only easy but hygenic when made at home.
    • First to begin with soak the bean in water for at least 8 hours or overnight.
    • Rinse it well, drain water completely. Keep covered in a cloth or a hot box for a day.
    • If you want long sprouts then keep it for a day mine is after 8 hrs. I would prefer short ones.
    • Anyways long or short doesn’t really matter for the nutrition and health benefits it gives. Once it starts to sprouting itself, the nutrition is doubled when compared to the normal bean.

But if you want more lengthy sprouts, then keep aside for another 3-4 hours extra. But just open and check then leave it undisturbed don’t toss or turn over.

    Expert Tips

    • You can even make mixed sprouts but soaking and getting sprouts for each bean will surely differ so keep that in mind.
    • You can make sprouts with mochai, dried green , yellow peas, chana, thattapayir etc.
    • You can either make salad with fresh sprouts or make a stir fry with it. You can also use this for any chaats like pani puri , dahi puri etc.

    Serving and Storage

Sprouts can be stored in fridge for up to a week. You can make curries, stir fries or eat it as such too.

Each bean takes different amount of time for the sprout to be visible. I tried to make sprouts with black chana using the same above method and it took around 2 and 1/2 days completely for the sprouts to come out. For black chana you need to soak overnight.

    • 1/2 cup green moong bean
    • 1/2 cup black chana

    Instructions

    • Take the bean you want to make sprouts here I’ve used green moong bean. Rinse it well twice or thrice.

    • Then next day drain water and transfer to a clean muslin cloth.
    • Bring the corners of the muslin cloth to the center, tie a knot and keep aside undisturbed for at least 8 hrs.
    • You can also keep it in a container/casserole (hot pack) and keep it closed.
    • After 8 hours, if you open you can see the sprouts coming.
