    About Pumpkin Puree

    Pumpkin Puree is made by cooking pumpkins until soft and blending it to a fine paste. This is very useful in many dishes like pasta, pie, curry, cakes, bread, milkshakes, latte etc. Make pumpkin puree from scratch and use it for all your recipes.

    Pumpkin Puree is very versatile and can be used in many of the dishes. You can freeze it and use it for many months. I usually do not add sugar while making pumpkin puree so that we can use it for both sweet and savory dishes.

    The color of the pumpkin puree depends on the variety of pumpkin you use. You can even use this pumpkin puree as a baby food. In India pumpkin is a vegetable available throughout the year so easy to make your own batch anytime.

    Pumpkin – There are many varieties of pumpkin available. Choose the one that suits your taste. The color ranges from bright yellow to orange.

    Choose small pumpkins which is packed with flavor, the larger the pumpkins they tend have less flavor.

    The best pumpkin varieties to use are :

    • Sugar Pumpkin
    • Butternut Squash
    • Buttercup Squash
    • Koginut Squash

    Methods to make Pumpkin Puree

    I have shared Pumpkin Puree from scratch using 4 easy methods :

    • Oven Method – This is a very common method but takes time for pumpkin to get roasted in oven but the flavor is so intense in this method.
    • Steaming Method – This is the quickest method, takes just 10 minutes to get cooked. Alternatively you can even add pumpkin to boiling water and cook.
    • Instant Pot Method – Add around 2 cups water to the steel insert. Place the trivert then place the steamer basket on it. Set it to pressure cook in high for 5 minutes. Let pressure release by itself, open cool down then puree it.
    • Pressure Cooker Method – To a pressure cooker add 1 cup water, 1 and 1/2 cups cubed pumpkin to it and pressure cook for 3 whistles. Let pressure release then open, strain water and puree the pumpkin pieces.

    How to make Pumpkin Puree Step by Step

    1.First take a slice of pumpkin. It is around 500 grams pumpkin.

    2.Remove the seeds part, you can wash the pumpkin seeds roast and enjoy it. Then remove the skin from the pumpkin.

    3.Chop into medium sized cubes. Rinse it well and pat dry it.

    Oven Method :

    4.Preheat oven at 180 DEG C for 10 minutes. Place a parchment paper on a baking tray and arrange the pieces.

    5.Bake in preheated oven at 180 DEG C for 30-35 minutes or until it is soft when a fork is inserted. Cool down completely.

    6.Add it to a blender.

    7.Blend it to a fine puree. Do not add water while blending.

    Steaming Method :

    8.Boil water in a sauce pan.

    9.Now arrange the pumpkin cubes in a steamer basket.

    10.Place the steamer basket inside the sauce pan once the water starts to boil.

    11.Cook for 10-12 minutes or until it becomes soft.

    12.Check by inserting a fork to check, if it is soft then switch off.

    13.Remove the steamer basket from the sauce pan and let it cool down.

    14.Transfer to a mixer jar.

    15.Blend it to a fine or coarse puree according to your preference. You can even mash it a masher if you like chunky pieces. Do not add water while blending.

    Expert Tips

    • You can choose any pumpkin variety you get the smaller size the better as it will be juicy and tender.
    • After cooking pumpkin cool down completely before blending.
    • This homemade pumpkin puree can be used in any recipe that calls for canned pumpkin puree.
    • Do not add water while blending.
    • You can either blend it in a mixer or use a masher to mash it to chunky pieces.
    • Oven roasted pumpkin puree gives a intense flavor though it takes time.

    Serving & Storage

    Store the pumpkin puree after cooling down in an airtight container. It keeps well in fridge for about a week and in freezer for about 3 months. You can even pour the pumpkin puree in a ice cube tray or silicone molds, freeze and store it in zip lock bags. This way you can have small cubes to use it for your recipes.

    1.What kind of pumpkin variety to use?

    Any kind of pumpkin variety that is available can be used. Sugar pumpkin, butternut squash, buttercup squash, koginut squash varieties are best to use.

    2.Can I use this as baby food?

    Yes you can use it for feeding your babies. Make fresh pumpkin puree every time if you are making to feed it for babies.

    3.How long can I store pumpkin puree?

    Pumpkin puree will stay good in fridge fro about a week and in freezer for about 3 months.

    4.Is it a must to remove skin while roasting in oven?

    No you can roast it with skin and remove it before blending too. Removing skin and roasting will be more easier so I chose that.

    5.Can I add sugar to pumpkin puree?

    es you can add sugar to pumpkin puree but it can be used only for sweet dishes. I would recommend to store pumpkin puree without sugar so that you can use it for both sweet and savory recipes.
