    Amma makes Thengai Thogayal(Coconut Thogayal) one with coriander leaves and this one with tamarind, I like both versions. Thogayal recipes are always handy for a lazy day lunch and it pairs well with just plain rice or even any variety rice.

    About Thengai Thogayal

    Thengai Thogayal is very easy and quick to make recipe. It is made by roasting spices along with coconut and grind it to slightly coarse chutney consistency. Thengai Thogayal tastes great with rice.

    I made a meal with rice, cluster beans curry, vadams and thengai thogayal it was such a satisfying combo. Thengai Thogayal tastes great with rasam and rice too. Iti s very light to tummy hence often made during sick days.

    Thengai Thogayal Ingredients

    • Coconut – Grated coconut is roasted and used.
    • Urad Dal – Urad dal is roasted along with chilies and used.
    • Hing – Hing aids digestion and gives flavor.
    • Red Chili – Red chili is used for spice.
    • Tamarind – Tamarind is used to balance the taste.
    • Oil – Oil is used for sauteing the spices and coconut.

    How to make Thengai Thogayal Step by Step

    1.Heat oil – add urad dal and red chilies fry till golden brown. Then add tamarind, hing and fry for 2 minutes. Then add coconut.

    2.Saute till moisture leaves and slightly browned. Transfer this to a mixer, add required salt, little water and grind it to a semi coarse paste.

    Serve it with hot steamed rice and rasam and papad – awesome combo!

    Expert Tips

    • You can also use a teaspoon of chana dal and pepper for variation.
    • Thogayal is always thick and the texture should be semi coarse not too smooth. So adjust water accordingly.
    • You can temper mustard seeds if you prefer.
    • Adding tamarind adds a nice tangy flavor which I like the most.

    Serving and Storage

    Thengai Thogayal tastes best when served with rice. This keeps well in fridge for 2 days.

    Ingredients
