    About Sweet Aval

Aval Nanachathu commonly called as Sweet Aval or Sweet Poha is a no cook snack made using flattened rice flakes with jaggery, ghee, coconut and cardamom powder. This is is the most popular sweet offering made for Gokulashtami or Krishna Jayanthi.

Aval Nanachathu is a malayalam word which means poha soaked. In Tamil Nadu it is called sweet aval, in North India it is called Sweet Poha and in Kerala it is called aval nanachathu. though called by different names in different locations the basic recipes remains the same.

This sweet aval recipe has many variations – you can add ghee fried cashews or even saute coconut in ghee and add it. I usually make another version of sweet aval recipe which is called aval varatunathu which involves cooking but this comes handy when you haven’t planned well ahead.

This simple sweet aval is very quick to make as it is a no cook version. Amma makes this as a back from school snack and I so love it. She shapes them into small balls like ladoos and serves with milk. You can try this quick snack for kids and I am sure they will enjoy!

    Sweet Aval Ingredients

    • Aval – You can use either use thick or thin poha. I used thin poha.
    • Jaggery – Use powdered jaggery free from impurities as we are adding it raw.
    • Coconut – Use freshly grated coconut. You can cut coconut into strips, pulse it in mixer to get grated coconut.
    • Ghee – Use fresh puree ghee. I used homemade ghee.
    • Cardamom powder – Cardamom powder is the main flavoring here.

    FAQS

1.Why is my sweet poha soggy?

    • If you have soaked poha for long it becomes mushy and soggy after all the ingredients are added.
    • Make sure to soak only for a short time and drain water completely. Soaking is needed only for thick variety of poha.

2.What variety of poha is best to use?

Thin variety poha works best as it absorbs the flavor well within a short span of time. However you can use thick poha too.
