I love crispy dosa and that is the main reason I tried Oats Dosa in that style. I was skeptical about how it will turn out but aftrer few trials of different proportions this is recipe proved to be one of the best as kids loved it so much and they did not even find it was oats dosa as the taste and texture comes very close to rava dosa.

    About Oats Dosa

This Oats Dosa is my recent addition to breakfast / dinner menu. Oats Dosa is a nutritious healthy crepe, it is instant and quick to make. What I like the best about Oats Dosa is with simple available ingredients in your kitchen you can make these crispy lacy dosas. Oats Idli and Oats Dosa comes alternatievely in our menu when there is no idli dosa batter.

I tried Oats Dosa quite a few times with different proportions and finally now I can confidently say this Oats Dosa Recipe is one of my best developed recipes. The best thing about this Oats Dosa is you need not ferment or give any resting time its quick to make and instant. If you do not have idli dosa batter at home this Oats Dosa comes to rescue, do try and enjoy!

Any chutney or sambar goes well with Oats Dosa. I love coconut chutney and idli podi the best for this dosa.

    Ingredients

    • Oats : You can use either rolled oats or quick cooking oats. But make sure to first pulse it to make it slightly coarse.
    • Flour : I use rice flour and sooji for giving it a crisp texture.
    • Spices & Herbs : Cumin seeds, Curry leaves, Ginger, Green chillies and Onion are finely chopped and used.

    Ingredients

    • 1 cup oats I used rolled oats, you can regular oats too
    • 1/4 cup rice flour
    • 1/4 cup rava
    • 1 tsp cumin seeds
    • 1 big onion finely chopped
    • 1 small green chilli finely chopped
    • oil as required
    • salt to taste
    • around 3 cups water or as required

    Instructions

    • To a dry mixer jar : add 1 cup rolled oats.
    • Grind it few times to get a slightly coarse flour. Oat flour ready, Set aside.
    • To a mixing bowl add oats flour, 1/4 cup rice flour, 1/4 cup rava.
    • Add 1/2 tsp cumin seeds, 1/4 cup onion, 1 tbsp curry leaves, 1 no green chilli and 1/2 tsp ginger all finely chopped along with reuqired salt.
    • Give a quick whisk
    • Add water little by little to form runny batter. It takes around 3 cups of water(approximately) but make sure to add little by little – do not add fully.
    • Form a runny batter.
    • Mix well. If you feel the batter is thick, add little more water. Now Oats Dosa batter is ready.
    • Heat dosa tawa – check by sprinkling water, it should sizzle really fast. Wipe off with a cloth. If dosa tawa is not really hot you will not be able to get holes while pouring which will not yield lacy crispy dosas. So check the tawa by sprinkling water and also to adjust heat. I recommend using cast iron dosa tawa for best results if not you can use regular iron tawa too.
    • Always mix from bottom before pouring dosa as flour gets settled at the bottom. So make sure to mix well and adjust consistency by adding water if the batter gets thick. The batter should be runny just like we make for rava dosa.
    • Now start pouring the batter starting from the edges and finishing in the center. Fill in the bigger holes by pouring the batter.
    • Drizzle oil at the edges and center. Let it cook in medium flame.
    • Cook until golden and the edges start to lift by itself as you can see.
    • You can either fold as such and serve or flip and cook too. As the dosas are lacy and thin flipping and cooking to other side is not a must. Crispy lacy oats dosa ready to serve!

    Video

    Notes

    • Just drizzle only a thin layer of the batter dont spread it , else you will not get crispy dosas.
    • Make your batter very thin so that pouring is easy enough. If you feel the batter is thick add little more water.
    • If the batter becomes very runny add 1-2 tbsp rice flour and adjust it.
    • You can powder oats and store it in advance so that its very helpful during our morning hurry burries.
    • Always mix the batter before pouring so that flour that has settled down will mix thoroughly.

    Expert Tips

    • Just drizzle only a thin layer of the batter dont spread it , else you will not get crispy dosas.
    • Make your batter very thin so that pouring is easy enough. If you feel the batter is thick add little more water.
    • If the batter becomes very runny add 1-2 tbsp rice flour and adjust it.
    • You can powder oats and store it in advance so that its very helpful during our morning hurry burries.
    • Always mix the batter before pouring so that flour that has settled down will mix thoroughly.

    Storing & Serving Suggestion

You can store the prepared batter for 2 days in fridge. I usually make the batter for breakfast / dinner, store the leftover batter in fridge and use it the next day.

Oats Dosa goes well with Sambar, Chutney, Idli Podi etc.

    Variations

This Oats Dosa Recipe works best but I have tried few variations which works well too:

    • Try replacing 1/4 cup sooji with 1/8 cup sooji and 1/8 cup wheat flour
    • For 1 cup oats you can try with 1/4 cup rice flour and 1/4 cup wheat flour with 1 tbsp sooji too but the texture varies.
    • Add finely chopped coriander leaves and 1/2 tsp whole pepper if you prefer.
    • You can add 1/2 cup thick curd and add water to make the batter.

    FAQs

1.Why is my Oats Dosa sticking to tawa?

It means your tawa is not seasoned properly. You can check dosa tawa seasoning here. For quick tawa seasoning.

    • Heat the dosa tawa add 1 tsp oil along with salt spread it over the tawa then remove it. Now make dosas.
    • Heat the dosa tawa add 1 tsp of oil break and add 2 red chillies, spread the chillies so that it touches all over the pan, cook for a minute, then remove it. Now make dosas

2.What type of Oats to use for Oats Dosa?

You can use either rolled oats or quick cooking oats. But make sure to first pulse it to make it slightly coarse to make oats flour then use it.

3.Why is my Oats Dosa not crispy?

Cook oats dosa in low medium flame, also drizzle enough oil which will yield crispy dosas.

4.I don’t see any holes while pouring the batter. Why?

It means the tawa is not properly heated. So heat and check by sprinkling water if it sizzles fast then the tawa is ready. Anotehr reason may be if the batter is not in the right consistency holes might not come while pouring. So adjust batter consistency and try again.

    5.Is Oats Dosa healthy?

Oats Dosa is sure a healthy alternate to our regular dosas. Oats is recommended to be consumed for diabetic patients as it helps in maintaining blood sugar levels.

@Sonia: There is no need for baking powder n soda in this recipe. The trick to get crispy dosas is to to pour starting from the corners and dont spread the dosa like we do for normal dosa. The thinner u pour the crispier ur dosa will be…U've have to drizzle the batter as we make for rava dosas

      Hi Sharmi,

I tried this dosa 4 times and still i have one doubt. Everytime i try to turn the dosa it breaks and very soft. Please advise what to do? I tried with Thin batter and poured it from coners as you said but still not crispy and cant turn the dosa. Please advise

You should pour like how we do it for rava dosa, dont spread it and let it cook well then flip it to other side and cook it.

Thanks for the recipe – is it steel cut oats or regular oats that you use? Thanks.
