    Fennel Powder is easy, quick to make and is so flavorful. We use fennel seeds powder in many south Indian dishes like biryani, curry, gravy, non-veg dishes etc. I love the flavor of fennel seeds so much. I always have jeera powder and fennel seeds powder in stock as it helps in my every day cooking.

    About Fennel Powder

    Fennel seeds is called ‘perunjeeragam’ or popularly known as ‘sombu’ in tamil. Fennel Powder is made by just roasting fennel seeds until slightly golden then grinding it to a fine powder. This spice blend comes handy and can be used for a variety of dishes.

    Homemade Fennel powder is very aromatic and flavorful also minus preservatives and added colors. And that is the main reason why I always prefer homemade spice blend to store bought ones. Fennel seeds powder also known as fennel powder or saunf powder can be used for gravies, curries, biryani and many Indian dishes.

    We may need to add fennel seeds in variety of Indian dishes but when it comes in mouth many will not like it so in that case using fennel seeds powder is the best option. Make this spice blend, store and use it for many dishes.

    Fennel seeds contains a lot of medical effects, it’s believed that fennel seeds improves eye sight and improves milk supply in nursing mothers. Fennel seeds is also used mouth freshener or sweetener, sugar coated fennel seeds are served as after meal mouth freshener in many restaurants.

    • Aids in digestion,
    • Used as a mouth freshener after meal.
    • They are rich in anti oxidants.
    • Helps in milk production for feeding mothers.
    • Strengthens bones.

    How to make Fennel Powder – Step by Step

    1.Measure 1/2 cup fennel seeds and add it to a kadai.

    2.Dry roast for 5 minutes in low flame until color slightly changes to golden.

    3.A slight color change is enough. Switch off and cool down completely.

    4.Transfer to a clean dry mixer jar.

    5.Grind to a fine powder.Spread in a plate to cool for sometime and then store.

    Homemade fennel seeds powder is ready! Store in a clean dry container.

    Expert Tips

    • Make sure to roast it in low flame do not burn it.
    • Using iron kadai ensures even roasting.
    • Do not let the color change a lot, just when it turns golden switch off and cool down.
    • Always cool down before grinding to avoid moisture.
    • Use a clean dry mixer jar, if it is moist wipe off with a cloth dry it well then use it.

    Serving & Storage

    Fennel powder can be stored in airtight jar and it keeps well for 2-3 months in room temperature itself and in freezer / fridge for a year. Fennel powder can be used in gravies, curries, biryani, pulao etc.

    1.Can I roast it in oven?

    Yes you can roast it in oven. Spread fennel seeds on parchment paper laid on baking tray. Preheat oven at 180 deg C for 10 minutes. Bake in preheated oven for 5-7 minutes, shake the tray.in between for even roasting.

    2.What are the dishes this can be used?

    You can use fennel seeds powder in curries, gravies, biryani, pulao, fries etc.
