Tawa Pizza Recipe | Pizza Without Oven

Tawa Pizza is a simple and tasty version of pizza made on stovetop without using oven. This recipe can be prepared by making a soft dough, adding sauce, vegetables and cheese on top and cooking it on tawa. It has a good mix of spicy, cheesy flavours and makes it enjoyable.

Ingredients

  • 2 and ½ cups wheat flour
  • ½ cup white flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoon oil
  • ¼ cup curd
  • salt to taste
  • around 1 to 1 and ¼ cups water

For the topping:

  • ¼ cup capsicum chopped lengthwise
  • ¼ cup onion chopped lengthwise
  • ½ cup baby corn chopped lengthwise - parboiled
  • ¼ teaspoon oregano
  • 3 tablespoon pizza sauce
  • ½ cup mozarella cheese
  • 1 generous pinch chilli flakes as needed
  • oil as needed

Instructions

  • To a mixing bowl - add wheat flour, white flour and baking powder.
  • Add baking soda, sugar and oil.
  • Add curd and required salt.
  • Mix well with your finger tips for even mixing, then add water little by little and knead to form a smooth dough not too stiff not too loose just like our chapathi dough.
  • Cling wrap the dough and leave aside for at least 2-3 hours in a warm place.
  • Meanwhile prepare the topping - Heat a teaspoon of oil, sauté baby corn, capsicum and onion along with oregano and chilli flakes.
  • Sauté for 2 minutes, set aside.
  • Now the dough must have risen. Get ready with all other ingredients.
  • Punch down and divide the dough into 3 balls. Take a ball flatten it thick or thin as per your liking, I made a slightly thin base. Prick with fork.
  • Brush the top with oil, heat a tawa or skillet. Carefully transfer the base to the skillet. Simmer and cook for 3 minutes.
  • Flip to other side and cook for 3 minutes. Now spread pizza sauce, arrange the vegetables.
  • Sprinkle cheese, cook covered for 2 minutes or until cheese is gooey and melts. Switch off, remove and cut into wedges and serve Tawa Pizza immediately.

Notes

  • Kneading– I knead the dough soft like chapathi dough and it should be smooth not too stiff or too loose or it may not cook well.
  • Resting dough – I keep the dough in warm place for few hours and it helps it to rise little.
  • Cooking – I cook the base on low flame so it cooks evenly from inside. I just flip and cook both sides before adding toppings on it.
  • Adding toppings – I add toppings after base is half cooked and it helps in better cooking. This makes vegetables and cheese cook properly.
  • Cover and cook – I always cover the pan after adding cheese and it helps in melting. It helps cheese melt nicely and evenly on top.
