Urad dal sweet porridge a healthy porridge made with homemade porridge mix and palm jaggery. Urad dal sweet porridge recipe with step by step pictures and video.

    urad dal sweet porridge

I made this sweet porridge using kali maavu that I made, but you can make it using store bought urad dal powder too.

Black urad dal has a lot of health benefits and is very good for bones. I always stock up with kali maavu – I make it at home and store it. It keeps well in room temperature atleast for 6 months. So this porridge is quick to make if you have the mix in hand. You can make either sweet porridge or savory porridge with the mix.

It is best to have it for breakfast as its wholesome and keeps you full till lunchtime. You can give this porridge for kids above 5 years.

    About Urad Dal Porridge

If you  want to make both the versions together:

    • For sweet porridge : First mix the powder with water, heat it up and cook until shiny and thick. Then cool down  divide into 2 portions. Let the mixture cool down.To one portion add palm jaggery syrup and milk along with cardamom powder. Mix well and your sweet urad dal porridge is ready.
    • For salt / savory porridge : To another portion of the prepared porridge as mentioned above, add buttermilk and salt. You can even temper mustard, jeera along with mor milagai, add to the porridge – Mix well. Your salt or savory porridge is ready.

    Variations

    • You can make both savory and sweet porridges using this mix.
    • If you don’t have palm jaggery you can use regular jaggery itself.
    • If you like nuts add it along with coconut.
    • I didn’t add ghee, but if you want you can add it for flavour and taste.
