spritz cookies recipe

Spritz cookies recipe sweet butter cookies made with a cookie press. It is also popularly known as Swedish butter cookie or pressed cookies.I was actually waiting to try these cookies but it took me this long to select a cookie press and buy it 🙂

The name ‘spritz‘ means “to squirt” which is what is done with soft cookie dough. The cookie dough for that reason is slightly moist and sticky when compared to the other butter cookie dough. These cookies are made with a special equipment named cookies press. The cookies press has a cylindrical barrel with a squeezing trigger at the bottom with a gun press at top. When we give the gun a press it gives a click sound and a cookie comes out at the bottom you should lift up carefully so that the cookie sticks to the tray.So this is the why the name, it squirts the soft dough through the beautiful discs given along with the cookie press. There are many actually , I just used snowflakes and  christmas tree.

You can decorate with jam, candied cherries or sugar sprinklers etc.I wanted mine a bit plain so ad just silver balls.

I took this recipe for reference from one of my favorite baking reference 🙂

Ingredients

  • 1 and 1/8 cup wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 no egg yolk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp milk (only if needed)

Instructions

  • Beat butter and powdered sugar until light add vanilla essence and salt.I used my electric whisk, you can use manual whisk too.
  • Add an egg, beat until fluffy then add the flour.
  • Mix well when it gets stuck to the electric whisk, add milk and combine.
  • The dough should be soft and sticky.Take your cookie press.I recently bought this cookie press from homecenter in a great sale.
  • I used snowflakes and christmas tree disc.Start pressing directly on the cookie tray.If you prefer you can slightly grease the tray but I didnt do.Don't use butter paper or parchement the cookies may not come out perfectly.
  • While you press the cookies, preheat oven at 180 deg C for 10 mins.Repeat to finish the dough.Add silver sprinkles or any of your favorite.
  • Bake in preheated oven at 180 deg C for 8-10 mins or until the edges start to brown.Gently remove the cookies when its still warm.It will be soft when warm, after cooling down becomes crispy. But don't forget to gobble atleast a few when warm, yes it tastes so good. You can thank me later.:)

Notes

The dough should not be tight. It should be sticky only then the cookies will be pressed out perfectly.
