Ragi Modak is a mild sweet healthier version of modak  made by steaming rice flour filled with dry fruits. Ragi Modak is liked by all ages and a good alternate for regular Modak to try for Ganesh Chaturthi. How to make Ragi Modak is described in this post with step by step pictures.
    ragi modak recipe

Ragi Modak is  healthy modak with finger millet flour.I love trying out many modak varieties this year wanted to try modak with ragi flour and it turned out above my expectations.

Yesterday I tried this finger millet modak  I tried it without rice flour and was doubtful about the taste but trust me, it tastes so good.

I tried  a simple no cook stuffing with nuts, it tasted so good by itself that few went inside just like that.

    For the stuffing:

    • 1/2 cup mixed nuts*
    • 3 tablespoon coconut
    • 2 and 1/2 tablespoon cane sugar
    • 1 and 1/2 tablespoon tutti frutti

I used pistachios, cashews and badam. You can use any dry fruit and nut of your choice.

    Instructions

    • Boil water till it starts boiling rigorously, now add it to little by little to the roasted flour.
    • Mix with a ladle then add more water and keep mixing till it gathers together like this. Make a soft dough.
    • Take mixed nuts in a mixer jar grind it coarse.
    • Now add cane sugar and coconut, pulse it few times. Transfer the mixture to a mixing bowl.
    • Add tutti frutti to it. Mix well. Shape them as balls. I made them slightly cylindrical.
    • Grease the modak mould with ghee or oil. Take your mould stuff a lemon sized ball into it. Make a hole in the center. Add the stuffing and press it.
    • Seal with little more dough.Gently open and take it out.
    • Arrange them in steamer plate greased with oil.Boil water in the steamer and place the plate inside. Steam cook 12-15 mins.
    • The kozhukattais will turn shiny and should not stick that is the right stage. Switch off and serve. Serve hot or warm!

    Notes

    • Adjust sweetness according to your preference but make sure the stuffing should a bit more sweet than usual.
    • You can dry grapes too.
