Toor dal dosa recipe with stepwise pictures and video

This toor dal dosa recipe was passed on to me from my friend when I was asking for different dosa recipes. The first time I tried it kids complained when they saw but had it.Next time when I made they all started liking it that it became a regular menu.

This toor dal dosa or thuvaram paruppu dosai is very easy to make no fermentation needed just that it needs soaking.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup idli rice
  • 1/2 cup toor dal
  • 1 tbsp whole urad dal
  • 1 one inch ginger
  • 3 nos red chillies
  • water as needed
  • salt to taste
  • oil as required

To temper

  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 tbsp curry leaves chopped finely
  • 1 cup onion chopped finely
  • a pinch hing

Instructions

  • Soak toordal, idli rice, urad dal,red chillies in water for 4 hours.
  • Rinse well and add to mixer jar.Add water little by little to make a runny batter.
  • The batter should be very runny so add water later after grinding too.To a kadai - heat oil add the items listed under to temper.Let it splutter.
  • Saute onion till it turns transparent, add required salt to it.Cool down completely then add it to batter.
  • Mix well.Add mixie rinsed water and little more water to make a runny batter like rava dosa batter.Add salt if needed.
  • Heat dosa tawa : Take a laddle full of batter, drizzle it in circular motion.Fill in the gaps. The tawa should be hot only then holes will form while pouring the batter.Add more water if the batter is too thick.
  • Drizzle oil.Let it cook, flip over the dosa and cook till golden.Fold and serve hot! Repeat to finish the batter.

Notes

  • If the batter is not runny then you cannot drizzle. But if you want to spread dosa then you can make a slightly thick dosa batter and spread it like our regular dosa.
  • Also tawa should be hot enough.
  • I would recommend using iron tawa to get a crispy dosa.
  • This batter keeps well even for the next day.
