As onam is nearing, this time I wanted to try Kalan which is one of the dishes in Sadhya menu. Aviyal is my fav so this is close in taste with it and we enjoyed the meal with hot plain rice...yumm!

Kalan Recipe - Ingredients
Recipe Reference: Yummy O Yummy
Serves: 2
Prep & Cooking time: 30 mins
Raw green plantain - 1/4 cup diced
Elephant yam - 1/4 cup diced
Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
Chilly powder - 1/2 tsp (Optional)
Pepper powder - 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves - 1 sprig
Salt - to taste
Sour yoghurt - 2 cups
Fenugreek powder - 1/4 tsp (Dry roast 1/2 tsp of fenugreek and grind it to a fine powder)
Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
Green chilies - 1
Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
Dry red chilli - 1
Elephant yam - 1/4 cup diced
Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
Chilly powder - 1/2 tsp (Optional)
Pepper powder - 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves - 1 sprig
Salt - to taste
Sour yoghurt - 2 cups
Fenugreek powder - 1/4 tsp (Dry roast 1/2 tsp of fenugreek and grind it to a fine powder)
To grind:
Grated coconut - 3/4 cupCumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
Green chilies - 1
To temper:
Coconut oil - 2 tspMustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
Dry red chilli - 1

Method:
1.Beat curd and keep aside.Grind the ingredients under 'to grind' to a semi fine paste and set aside.

2.Cook the vegetables in required water with pepper and turmeric powder till soft and is slightly mushy. Drain water and transfer this to a kadai. Add the coconut paste and give a quick stir.

3.Saute till nicely blended. Add fenugreek powder, more turmeric powder, salt to taste and saute till raw smell of coconut goes off. Add beaten curd and simmer for 10mins.
4.Keep stirring in between to avoid curdling. When it reaches a semi thick consistency switch off. Heat oil in a pan and temper the items under 'to temper', add it to the curry and give a quick stir.
Serve with plain rice with any spicy curry.

My Notes:
- The curry gets to thicken faster so switch it off accordingly may be a bi runny.
- You can even mash up veggies before adding it to the curry.
- Take care to keep stirring after curd is added to avoid curd from curdling.
- You can even pressure cook the vegetables. Yam takes time to cook so while it is half cooked I added raw banana.
