Pattani Kulambu Recipe | Dried Peas Curry

Pattani Kulambu Recipe is a tasty & mild curry made by cooking pattani or dried peas in tomato & onion puree, tempered spices & herbs. Ingredients

  • 1 cup dried yellow peas
  • 1 small sized onion finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon coriander leaves finely chopped
  • 2 teaspoon sambar powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala powder
  • 1 cup water as needed
  • salt to taste

To grind together:

  • 2 medium sized onion chopped roughly
  • 3 medium sized tomatoes chopped roughly
  • 3 nos garlic
  • 1/2 inch ginger
  • 1 teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper corns
  • 1 no clove
  • 1/2 inch cinnamon
  • 1 no cardamom
  • 1/4 cup coconut tightly packed

To temper:

  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 no green chilli
  • few curry leaves

Instructions

  • Soak dried peas overnight. Pressure cook along with enough water and salt for 2-3 whistles. Set aside.
  • Now grind all the ingredients along with little water (if needed) to a slightly coarse paste. Set aside.
  • Heat oil in a kadai - add all the ingredients listed under 'to temper' let it splutter then add the onion tomato mixture along with mixer rinsed water.
  • Add 1 cup water along with sambar powder, mix it well. Let it boil for 15 mins until raw smell leaves.
  • Then add cooked peas and boil for few mins.
  • Add garam masala powder and coriander leaves. Mix it well. Boil for 2 mins until the curry becomes thick.
  • Slightly mash it using a masher. Boil for 2 mins then switch off. Relish Pattani Kulambu!

Notes

  • Cook peas until soft but not too mushy.
  • If you don't have sambar powder replace with red chilli powder and coriander powder.
  • You can replace dried yellow peas with dried green peas or fresh green peas or even channa.
