Murmura Chivda Recipe

Murmura Chivda is a savoury snack made by tempering peanuts, fried grams with spices and tossing it with puffed rice. It has spicy, salty and slightly sweet taste which makes it very addictive to eat. It's popular as a quick homemade snack because it takes less time and ingredients are very simple.

Ingredients

  • 2 and ½ cups puffed rice / pori
  • ¼ cup peanuts
  • 3 tablespoon fried gram dal
  • 2 tablespoon raisins
  • 2 tablespoon chopped almonds
  • 2 tablespoon coconut pieces
  • 1 small sprig of curry leaves
  • 2 nos green chillies slitted
  • 1 teaspoon chilli powder
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon sugar optional
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tablespoon oil

Instructions

  • First heat oil and add peanuts and fry until crisp, remove and set aside.
  • Now add fried gram dal and fry until golden, remove and set aside.
  • Add chopped almonds, fry until golden, remove and set aside.
  • Now add raisins and fry until it bubbles up and golden, remove and set aside.
  • Fry coconut pieces. Fry until golden brown, remove and set aside.
  • Now add green chillies and curry leaves and fry until crispy.
  • Now add all other ingredients to the pan and toss them well.
  • Add the spice powder along with salt and sugar. Toss it well for even mixing.
  • Now add puffed rice, toss it well. Switch off.
  • Cool down then store in airtight container. Enjoy Murmura Chivda!

Notes

  • Roasting – I always check puffed rice before using it. If it feels soft I roast it in pan for few minutes so it becomes crisp again.
  • Frying ingredients – I fry the peanuts, raisins and nuts in oil. It helps ingredients cook and release its full flavour.
  • Adjust spice – I add extra chillies for spicier taste. If making for children reduce chilli powder and green chillies.
  • Mixing – I just mix the fried ingredients well with puffed rice. This helps spices coat puffed rice more evenly.
  • Cooling – I cool the mix completely before storing. If stored while warm it loses the crisp texture.
