Dal Palak Recipe

Dal Palak is a comforting side dish made by cooking dal with palak, onion, garlic, tomato and tempering spices. Dal Palak is a tastier form of palak that can be relished with roti, chapati and rice meal. Learn to make Dal Palak with step by step pictures.

Ingredients

  • 1 bunch palak ~2 cups tightly packed
  • ½ cup toor dal
  • 1 medium sized onion finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon garlic chopped
  • 1 tomato
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chilli powder optional
  • salt to taste

To Temper:

  • 2 teaspoon ghee
  • 1 teaspoon oil
  • ½ teaspoon mustard seeds
  • ½ teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 generous pinch hing
  • few curry leaves
  • 1 red chili

Instructions

  • Pressure cook toor dal up to 4 whistles until mushy with turmeric powder and salt. Then mash it up with  a ladle and set aside. Heat ghee and add the items under 'to temper' table and allow it to splutter.
  • Then add garlic, onion and saute till golden. Then add tomato and saute till raw smell of tomato leaves and is mushy. Wash palak and add it to the tempered items.
  • Saute till it shrinks in size. Add red chili powder and transfer this to the cooked dal. and give a stir. Allow it to cook for 3-5 minutes in low flame.
  • Then mash it up with a ladle to combine well. Allow it for a boil and switch it off as per your required consistency.

Notes

  • You can try this dal with any other variety of spinach too.
  • The consistency should be thick and creamy.
  • The measurement of dal and greens can be altered as per your choice.
  • You can even add 2 tablespoon coconut paste to make it more thick.
