Paruppu Thogayal | Paruppu Thuvaiyal

Paruppu Thogayal is a popular Brahmin rice mix made by grinding dal & spices coarsely into a paste. Parppu Thogayal is a healthy & comforting mix for rice & is relished as a side too. Paruppu Thogayal is an easy side dish to make when you are busy with other works or with me time. How to make Paruppu Thuvaiyal is explained in this post with step by step pictures.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup toor dal
  • 1 to 2 tablespoon coconut
  • 2 red chillies
  • 2 garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper corn
  • a pinch hing
  • 1 teaspoon oil
  • salt to taste
  • water as required

Instructions

  • Heat oil in a pan, dry roast dhal till golden brown. Set aside.
  • In the same pan, add coconut, pepper corns, garlic, red chillies, salt and hing and roast till coconut turns slightly brown and chillies are crisp.
  • Allow it to cool and grind it with little water to a semi coarse paste.
  • Add water according to the consistency you want. Paruppu Thogayal ready!
  • Serve Paruppu Thogayal with hot steamed rice and its a tasty and a comforting combo.

Notes

  • I made it little on the chutney side as this consistency is easy for mixing with rice. You can adjust water according to the consistency you want.
  • Take care not to burn the dal else the dip will have a bitter taste.
  • Tastes best with steamed rice or even with rasam rice.
  • I like garlic flavour the best in this thogayal but some will not like garlic smell so ignore it as per your liking.
