  • 3 tbsp chana dal
  • 2 nos red chillies
  • 1 no big onion(chopped roughly)
  • 1 no small tomato(chopped roughly)
  • 1 and 1/2 tsp oil
  • a tiny pinch hing
  • salt to taste
  • water as needed

To temper:

  • 1/2 tsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • a sprig curry leaves


  • Heat oil in a pan - add chana dal and red chillies, fry until the dal turns golden brown.Remove and set aside.Now in the same pan add onion and tomato, saute until tomatoes turn mushy and raw smell leaves.
  • Remove from flame and transfer the roasted ingredients to a mixer jar.Add required salt and water , grind to a semi fine paste.
  • Heat oil in a separate kadai, add mustard seeds and curry leaves, let it splutter.Now add the tempering to the chutney.Mix well.
  • Serve with idli dosa etc.
