Yam Fry Recipe

Yam Fry is a spicy, crispy side dish made by marinating yam with tempered & grind spices and shallow frying it until golden brown. Yam Fry is great side and an appetizer too that is liked by all for its taste. Yam Fry explained in this post with step by step pictures.

Ingredients

To roast and grind:

  • 1 tablespoon coriander seeds
  • 1 teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2 small dried red chillies

To temper:

  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • a small sprig of curry leaves

Instructions

  • Dry roast the ingredients listed under ' to roast and grind' until browned and aroma comes. Transfer to mixer jar.
  • Grind to a coarse mixture, Set aside.
  • Cut yam into bite sized squares and wash well to get rid of the mud smell. 
  • Then cook it along with turmeric powder until soft yet crunchy enough to bite.
  • Now add the spice mixture along with garam masala powder and marinate, keep aside for 15mins.
  • Heat oil in a pan - add the items listed under 'to temper' let it splutter.
  • Add marinated yam and roast until golden brown. Add salt if needed. It will take at least 10mins in low flame to get roasted well. Switch off. Yam Fry ready!

Notes

  • You can make it more masala/gravy kind by adding little water.
  • This recipe works good even for potato and raw banana too.
  • While cooking yam make sure not to mush it up.
