Kollu Chutney

Kollu Chutney is a mild, comforting chutney made by grinding roasted horse gram and blending it with tempered spices. Kollu Chutney is healthy & diet friendly side for idli, dosa and other tiffin.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup kollu / horsegram
  • 1 tablespoon chana dal
  • 1 teaspoon jeera
  • 2 tablespoon coconut
  • 1 teaspoon tamarind
  • 2 dried red chillies
  • salt to taste

To Temper :

  • 1 teaspoon oil
  • 3/4 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • a pinch hing
  • 1/2 teaspoon urad dal
  • few curry leaves

Instructions

  • Dry roast horse gram till slightly browned, it will start giving a nice aroma at that stage switch and transfer to a plate, set aside.
  • In a pan – add chana dal, red chillies and coconut and roast for 3mins.
  • Then add horse gram and roast for 2mins.
  • Finally add tamarind. Cool down the mixture and transfer to a mixer.
  • Add little water and grind it form a semi coarse paste.
  • Temper the items listed under ‘to temper’ let it splutter then transfer the tadka to the chutney, add required salt and mix well.
  • Serve Kollu Chutney with hot idli / dosa.

Notes

  • If you like ginger flavour, then add a small piece of ginger while grinding.
  • You can even add garlic while roasting the ingredients then grind it.
  • Add 1 big onion while sauteing to give a different flavour.
