Ellu Podi | Sesame Powder

Ellu Podi is a flavourful powder made by grinding roasted lentils, ellu (sesame /til) spices & herbs. Ellu Podi is used as side for idli, dosa by mixing it with oil and relished by powder lovers. Ellu Podi recipe is explained in this post with step by step pictures.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup urad dal
  • 3/4 cup sesame seeds
  • 1/4 cup chana dal
  • 6 nos red chillies
  • 2 nos kashmiri chilli
  • a sprig curry leaves
  • 1 pinch hing
  • salt to taste

Instructions

  • Dry roast urad dal till golden brown, set aside. Now add chana dal and red chillies.
  • Roast till its golden brown in color, set aside. Now add sesame seeds and roast till it pops up and is golden. Set aside.
  • Add curry leaves and roast until its crisp. Cool down the ingredients completely then transfer to a mixer jar. Add required salt.
  • Add hing and grind to a slightly coarse mixture.
  • Cool down then store Ellu Podi in a dry airtight container.

Notes

  • You can even use black sesame seeds replacing white.
