Tamarind Chutney

Tamarind Chutney is a sweet & tangy sauce made by grinding tamarind & dates with jaggery and spices. Tamarind Chutney is a filler for Dahi puri, papdi chaat, bhel puri and other chaat varieties. Tamarind Chutney Recipe is described in this post with step by step pictures.

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup brown dates seedless tightly packed
  • 2 tablespoon tamarind
  • 3/4 tablespoon jaggery
  • 1 teaspoon jeera
  • 1 teaspoon red chilli powder

Instructions

  • Dry roast jeera till nice aroma comes, then grind it to a fine powder, set aside.
  • Soak dates and tamarind in water till immersing water for 30mins.Remove the fiber part in tamarind and then soak.
  • Remove seeds and fiber from tamarind.
  • Remove seeds from dates if you are using dates with seeds.
  • Pressure cook dates and tamarind with very little water say 1/3 cup for 3 whistles.
  • Cool down and then grind it to a smooth paste.
  • Transfer this mixture to a pan and heat it up.
  • Add jaggery and red chilli powder.Simmer and let it boil for 5mins.
  • Once it becomes saucy add roasted jeera powder and give another boil till the chutney becomes thick like sauce consistency.
  • Switch off and store it in clean container, refrigerate until use.
  • Serve Tamarind Chutney with any chaat!

Notes

  • Make sure you remove the fiber part in tamarind before grinding.
  • The sweet chutney will become thick after boiling, so while using for chaats you can mix it with water and use it.
  • But make sure you take only required amount of sweet chutney transfer to a bowl and then add water. Do not add water in the storing container itself, then it will get spoiled soon.
  • It keeps well for at least 2-3 weeks under refrigeration.
  • You can use this chutneys for sandwiches and chaat.
